Surviving a Blacklist Brought Tsai Chin New Found Freedom
Only a university student when she won thundering fame with the song "Just like your tenderness", evergreen songstress, Tsai Chin, is a true blue survivor. Her upcoming concert, dissected into four segments to represent four stages of her three-decade career - from her sudden rise to fame, her prime in the 80s, and subsequent low ebb to her second prime - will be filled with songs that represent each phase. Some of them rendered with heart wrenching memories when she found herself unwanted by record companies.
In a recent teleconference with the local media, she said, "The decade between 1990 to 2000 was tough. I plucked up my courage and asked my boss 'Am I blacklisted?' He cried and told me, 'Tsai Chin, all of us has been blacklisted.' International record companies were entering the market and they were only interested in marketing fresh talents. Veterans like me could only qualify for compilations."
